Caffeine as a Bodybuilding Supplement

Should caffeine be used in bodybuilding supplements?  Do you stay away from any supplement that has caffeine as a major ingredient?  You don’t need to avoid it.  The reactions of the body to caffeine make it a good bodybuilding supplement.

Adenosine is a substance that your body makes to help you sleep.  Adenosine hooks to receptors in the brain making you sleepy by expanding blood cells and reducing nerve cell activity.  Caffeine looks just like adenosine to your body, but it acts the opposite.  Instead of getting sleepy when caffeine latches on to brain receptors, you get a burst of energy because nerve cells go faster and neuron firing in the brain is increased.

The increased neuron firing causes the pituitary gland to make adrenaline.  The “buzz” affect you sometimes experience when you have had a lot of coffee is a result of the rapid neuron firing and the adrenaline together.  When the body thinks it is in danger it releases Adrenaline, which cuases the following bodily reactions:

Your breathing tubes expand to help you receive more oxygen so your muscles work more effectively.

Heart rate increases to move that oxygenated blood to the muscles.

Blood vessels closer to the skin narrow, increasing blood flow to the muscles.

Blood flow to the stomach reduces.

The liver puts more sugar into the blood for more energy.

Muscles contract getting ready for action.

Your workout can be much more productive when your body is reacting to adrenaline.  Look at Biceps Training to see how you can combine this supplement with good form to get big biceps.

Caffeine can really be one of the best bodybuilding supplements, so don’t avoid it.

About 500 mg of caffeine a day is safe for most people, and taking it as a supplement before your workout will help you train harder and longer.  You do not have to drink 8 cups of coffee before your workout to get the caffeine you need, nor do you have to buy expensive name-brand supplements.  The best, least expensive bodybuilding supplement can easily be had by doing this:

Go to your local pharmacy and look for the generic brand of “No-Doze” or “Stay-Alert.  Make sure the generic has identical ingredients as the name brand by checking the active ingredients label.  Look for uncoated tablets because they are more easily crushed.  Each pill generally has the same amount of caffeine as 2 1/2 cups of coffee – 200 mg..

Using two spoons, crush one tablet into a powder about 15 minutes before your workout.  Sprinkle it into either juice or coffee and drink it.  Caffeine effects fade after about an hour and are not permanent.  Look at this article about getting big biceps or this one about ab training to see how to best use the extra burst of energy you get from caffeine.

Some research has shown that using caffeine may not only reduce the chances of developing Parkinson’s disease, but also may boost memory.  So use caffeine to enhance muscle building and stop avoiding it.
